Sask Junior Athletes compete at Junior Nationals - Gabrielle Edwards wins Silver Metal!

Congratulations to the Saskatchewan Jr. participants who raced in very challenging weather conditions at the Junior National Championship in Gatineau on July 11.  Heavy rainfall all day left the run and bike course full of huge pools of water resulting in three bike crashes in both the Jr. women’s and men’s races. The Junior races fielded 41 women and 56 men.

Gabrielle Edwards won the silver medal in the Junior Elite women’s category.  Gabrielle is the first 15 year old to be granted approval by Triathlon Canada to race up in the junior category and in only her third junior elite race she clocked 1:01.02, seventeen seconds behind gold medalist, Alison Hooper from Victoria.  After having the best swim of her season, Abby Miller went down on her bike after bumping wheels.  Bravely, she jumped back in the race and finished 24th.  Nadine Brenaut put in her fastest race and running very well, finished in 30th place. Joanne Traves, 33rd,  and Alecia Lukash, 36th, in similar fashion, competed with the strongest races of their seasons.

On the men’s side, Jeramie Anderson made the second chase pack and put in the best race of his junior career, with an excellent finishing time of 59:14.  Connor Hammond form Ontario was the men’s gold medalist with a time of 56:10.  Jeramie’s time is not yet recorded in the results as his chip was lost in the swim.  The officials and timing company are working on including Jeramie in the results.  Sash Broda, in only his third junior elite race, finished 33rd,  putting in a solid race.  Joel Howlett, after flatting at the Pan American Championships in May and then finishing 4th and 5th in the junior elite races at Birds Hill Park and Montreal was ready for this race.  Joel came out of the swim in 14th place and biked very well in the chase pack having the 3rd fastest bike time.  By the time the run came, however, cramping and nausea set in and Joel had to fight to just finish the race.

Full results can be found at Sportstats.ca.

These Juniors will be racing in the adult sprint category at Duck Mountain on July 25.  They will also be helping with the youth clinic and volunteering at the Man/Sask youth race the next day.  They will complete the season in P.E.I. with the Canada Summer Games individual competition on August 18th and the team relay on August 21st.

Saskatchewan Junior Team Continues to Compete - July 6th, 2009

Saskatchewan junior provincial team athletes continue to gain experience and perform well in the Teck National Junior Series.  Just a few weeks after competing in the Western Championships held at Birds Hill Park (June 7), followed by Spin off Spadina where the Juniors placed the top three males and females in the sprint category, the Juniors travelled to Montreal to compete in the Eastern Canadian Championships at Coteau-Du-Lac on June 20th.

Joel Howlett again had a very strong race placing 5th  of the 45 male participants.  Joel was in the lead pack and off the bike in first position.  The 5k run then became the race to watch.  Jeramie Anderson also had a solid race in 19th place making the large chase pack and running a 17:58.  Sash Broda just missed the chase pack and rode with one other athlete for the 20k bike finishing in 38th position.

On the girls’ side, Gabrielle Edwards had a very strong race despite dealing with asthma problems on the run, finishing 7th of the 29 female competitors.  Abby Miller (17th) and Alecia Lukash (27th) came out of the water together, but missed the chase pack and had to work with one other athlete throughout the bike.  Abby and Nadine Brenaut (22nd), who biked on her own the entire 20k, both ran very well.

The provincial junior team, joined by Joanne Traves, the Canada Summer Games Sask Team alternate, will travel to Gatineau on July 8th to get ready for the Junior National competition on July 11th.

BIRDS HILL, MB - On June 7 at Birds Hill Park just outside Winnipeg, Canada's top junior elite triathletes from B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec gathered together to qualify for the their respective Canada Summer Games teams. Conditions race day were far from perfect with 15km winds, a water temperature of 13.5C and an outdoor temperature of 12C! Many athletes had difficulty taking on and off their helmets, and the Saskatchewan team wore arm and leg warmers under their wetsuits for added warmth. In the race overall, Saskatchewan did very well with Joel Howlett in the men's category placing a strong 4th with a time of 1:00:07 behind first place Jeff Phillips of B.C. with a time of 59:10.

Florida Camp: December 26th to January 6th

Some of the Sask. Canada Summer Games and high performance youth athletes travelled to St. Petersburg, Fla. to train with the Jr. Manitoba team, Dec. 26- Jan. 6. The focus has been swim training and, secondarily, run training. They started the camp racing in a 5 mile road race. Sask. athletes took away a third place (Abby Miller) in the 16-19yr old category and a first place (Gabrielle Edwards)in the 13-15yr. old category. The camp has included 2 swims and 1 run or strength workout a day. We also took advantage of the ocean with an ocean swim brick workout (swim/run). Athletes have learned about keeping hydrated and nourished, grocery shopping and cooking for themselves, as well as being responsible for getting themselves up and to the workouts on time. They have all represented Sask. well and will come away with improved swim technique and times and some excellent memories.

2009 Canada Summer Games Saskatchewan Team Selection

INTRODUCTION
This document outlines the talent identification, qualification and selection procedures of the Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation (STAC) Canada Summer Games (CSG) Committee for determining those athletes invited to participate in the selection process and ultimately represent Saskatchewan at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island. The objective of these procedures is to select the Team that is the most capable of achieving podium performances at the Games or assisting the Team to achieve the highest team ranking possible amongst the other provinces and territories.

TALENT IDENTIFICATION and TEAM SELECTION

Stage 1

A list of Saskatchewan athletes aged 16 - 20 years as of December 31, 2009 who competed in a sanctioned triathlon event in 2008 was compiled. These athletes were then ranked according to their triathlon times. Eight males and 8 females were identified based on these time rankings. Athletes who had shown a keen interest in triathlon through training and racing pursuits in 2007 were also included. Nineteen (19) athletes were identified in the Stage 1 process. In order to continue in the selection process, individuals will be asked to commit to specified training criteria. Individuals agreeing to abide by the criteria will then be invited to attend training clinics designed to improve their skills and fitness levels. They will also be provided with a general training plan to follow should they not be training with a coach.

Stage 2

In December of 2008, athletes will participate in a 400m swim time trial and a 3000m run time trial overseen by the CSG Coach. Athletes will be ranked according to their combined time in the two trials. The 4 top-ranked males and the 4 top-ranked females will be selected to continue in the process. Camps and clinics will be offered to athletes as well as sports science and medicine services.

Stage 3

Three males and 3 females will be chosen for the team to represent Saskatchewan at the Canada Summer Games. This selection will be based on the finishing position in the qualifying race (Birds Hill Park, MB) as well as the athletes' swim and run performance times during the 5 months preceding the race. Athletes will also need to be deemed draft legal on the bike to be eligible for the CSG team selection. If necessary, the Spin event at Pike Lake may also be used for selection. The CSG Team and alternates will be announced on June 26, 2009. The Canada Summer Games Committee holds the responsibility for the selection of the Team and its alternates.

a. One alternate female and one alternate male will be selected using the criteria identified above. Alternates will compete as team members if one of the following situations occur:

an injury to a selected team member such that he or she is unable to compete at the Games.
failure of a selected team member to meet the eligibility criteria as set out in the "Eligibility section" of this document.
a selected team member is deemed "unfit to compete". Being deemed "unfit to compete" will be determined by, but is not limited to the following factors:
  • illness
  • fitness level
  • level of health
  • unrecovered injury
  • lack of readiness for competition
  • failure to meet STAC's Code of Conduct for the Canada Summer Games.

TEAM SIZE

The team will consist of three male athletes and three female athletes.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

In order to be eligible for selection to the Saskatchewan Team, the athletes must meet all of the following criteria:

a. Athletes must be members in good standing of the Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation (STAC) at the time of qualification and until the completion of the Games.
b. Athletes must be members in good standing of a sanctioned, local triathlon club at the time of qualification and until the completion of the Games.
c. Athletes must meet the Saskatchewan residence policy as specified in the Canada Games Package.
d. Athletes must return to the STAC CSG Committee, a signed Athlete Agreement Contract to compete in the Games.
