SASKATOON TO HOST CANADA’S BEST JUNIOR AGED TRIATHLETES JUNE 24TH, 2012

SASKATOON, SK – Saskatchewan will host the best junior-aged triathletes (age 16-19) from across Canada at the Craven-Genki Pike Lake Triathlon on June 24th, 2012. Hosted by the Saskatoon Triathlon Club Inc (STCI) and the Saskatchewan Triathlon Association (STAC), the Craven-Genki Pike Lake Triathlon is the first of four national calibre Junior Elite races in the Teck Junior Elite Race Series hosted by Triathlon Canada (the other three events are slated for Ottawa, ON, Magog, PQ and Kelowna, BC.) This race will also be a world qualifier for all adult competitors age 19 and older to earn up to 48 spots at the 2013 World Triathlon Championships in London, England, expected to be held on the same race course as the upcoming Olympic race. The Craven-Genki Triathlon will serve as the provincial qualifier for Saskatchewan’s age group athletes selecting our team to represent the province at Canada’s National Triathlon Championship in 2012.

“To be invited to host a race of this magnitude is very exciting for us. We are exceptionally proud of our athletes, who we know have ability to compete alongside the best of the best in Canada,” says STAC President CJ Katz. Organizers of the Pike Lake event expect in excess of 250 racers to descend upon the picturesque park to swim (750 m), bike (20 km) and run (5 km). Under the guidance of Provincial Head Coach, RossAnn Edwards of the newly established Saskatchewan Triathlon Centre (STC), Saskatchewan’s junior elite team has consistently offered strong competition against the big provinces in Canada. Indeed, Saskatoon’s Gabrielle  Edwards will enter the 2012 season as the #1 ranked junior elite woman  triathlete in Canada, having wrapped up the 2011 race season with a third  place finish in the Teck Junior Elite Race Series. She will be racing to medal in front of the home crowd. If you’re looking to watch the best of the best – from our province and across the country – this is the race to be at! Race registration will be open in early 2012 (watch STAC for details).  Spectators are welcome with no admission charge.
