Paul Tichelaar Headlines the STAC Annual Awards Banquet, March 17th, 2012 at the Willows Golf & Country Club
 SASKATOON, SK – Olympic Triathlete Paul Tichelaar, who represented Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, will be the guest speaker for the 2012 Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Annual Awards Banquet, March 17th at the Willows Golf & Country Club in Saskatoon. The evening banquet will recognize the great triathlon performances from 2011 including Team Saskatchewan’s strong performance at the Western Canada Summer Games and celebrate significant contributions from volunteers of the past season.
10 am Swim Meet at the Shaw Centre Will Start the Day. All Adult Ticket purchases include entry into the Swim Meet and the afternoon session with Paul Tichelaar.
Tichelaar will lead the Afternoon presentation at the Willows, 3 pm !
The events of March 17th will begin with a swim meet at the Shaw Centre in the morning hosted by the Saskatoon Triathlon Club Incorporated (STCI). Paul Tichelaar will be present for the swim meet. In the afternoon, Tichelaar will lead a triathlon clinic session at the Willows. All ticket holders may participate in the swim meet and session with Paul Tichelaar in the afternoon. An AGM will follow the clinic in the afternoon, followed by an awards banquet in the evening.
This Event is a fundraiser for the Saskatchewan Triathlon Centre (STC) with part of the proceeds of each ticket supporting STC Junior Elite Athletes. Tickets are on sale through the Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation web site, www.triathlonsaskatchewan.org. Adult tickets are $40 for the banquet. Youth tickets are $15.

Tichelaar has had a strong career representing Canada in triathlon. He burst onto the international scene in 2011 with a 5th place finish in the junior category at the International Triathlon Union (ITU) event in Edmonton. As a professional, he has had many strong finishes in ITU events leading up to the 2008 Olympics including a Silver Medal in Cancun, Mexico and numerous to 8 finishes. At the Olympics in Beijing, Paul finished 28th. Since 2008, Tichelaar has gradually moved to competing in long course triathlons finishing his first ironman as a professional in Penticton this past summer despite battling injuries. Overall, Tichelaar was 150th in the field of over 2000 triathletes in Penticton.

HUSKIE BASKETBALL’S MIKE LIEFFERS MOVING TO TRIATHLON!!
SASKATOON – Mike Lieffers will trade in his basketball for a bike at the 13th Annual Brainsport Kids of Steel (KOS) Triathlon on Saturday June 18th. Mike, along with other Huskie athletes, will be testing their endurance alongside 12 and 13 year olds. They’ll be donning cute latex swim caps and free styling it for 300 m in Riversdale Pool, then soaking wet and with a helmet tightly affixed to their noggins they’ll immediately cycle 10 km around the park, and then run a final 3 km to the finish line. Who will make it there first? Mike and the boys, or the kids? Find out by coming out and cheering on your favorite Huskie and the rest of the kids at 8:30 am on Saturday morning, June 18th! Entry is free.
Part of the EVRAZ Kids of Steel Race Series, the Brainsport event is the biggest triathlon on the schedule, drawing over 200 kids aged 6 to 15. Operated by the Saskatoon Triathlon Club Inc.(STCI), the Brainsport KOS Triathlon gives kids of all levels and abilities a chance to have fun doing three things all kids love to do…swim, bike and run. Mike Lieffers has just been named to the Team Canada roster for the 26th Summer Universiade, this August in China. Mike started every game for the Men’s Huskie Basketball team in 2010-11, averaging close to ten points and ten rebounds per game. It will be something to see the 6 foot 8 Lieffers in the pool with the young triathletes. Mike will be competing with the 12/13 year olds at the race.

Saskatchewan Triathletes compete in first Continental Cup in Ixtapa, Mexico
IXTAPA, MEXICO – Under difficult conditions, Joanne Traves and Rachael Edwards, both members of the Saskatchewan Triathlon Center, competed in the Under 23 Age Group at their first Continental Cup on Saturday, May 28 in Ixtapa, Mexico. In very hot conditions, Joanne Traves of Saskatoon had a solid first U23 race placing 18 (2:29:49) in a field of 25 (S 24:19/B 1:15:35/R 46:01). Rachael Edwards, also from Saskatoon, was in 13th place (S 23:27/B 1:10:53) when she was forced to stop the race due to heat exhaustion.
Canada's Manon Letourneau (Quebec) raced very well to capture a bronze medal. Alexandra Coates from Victoria was 9th. On the men's side, Canadians dominated the podium with a 1st (Kyle Jones) and 3rd place (Brent McMahon) finishes. The Continental Cup is an International Triathlon Union (ITU) event. Joanne and Rachael will race in their next Continental Cup event in Coteau du Lac, Quebec, June 26th.

Saskatchewan Triathletes compete in first Continental Cup in Ixtapa, Mexico
IXTAPA, MEXICO – Joanne Traves and Rachael Edwards, both members of the Saskatchewan Triathlon Center, will be competing in the Under 23 Age Group at their first Continental Cup on Saturday, May 28 in Ixtapa, Mexico. The field of 25 women will head into the surf at 10:35am with an air temperature in the high 30's. The Continental Cup is an International Triathlon Union (ITU) event. The race is on Saturday, May 28th.
Rachael hopes to build on an already successful season. In February, Rachael teamed with her sister, Gabrielle to place second in a team event at the Brazil Fast Triathlon. Joanne represented Saskatchewan at the 2009 Canada Summer Games and competed as an elite junior for Saskatchewan in 2010. Both young women train through the Saskatchewan Triathlon Centre (STC) which provides developmental and elite training for Saskatchewan`s triathletes.
Joanne and Rachael will race in their next Continental Cup event in Coteau du Lac, Quebec, June 26th. Both Joanne and Rachael are from Saskatoon.

Craven-Genki Pike Lake Triathlon Now a Qualifier for World Triathlon Championships
SASKATOON, SK – Athletes competing at the upcoming Craven-Genki Pike Lake Triathlon on June 19, 2011 can now qualify for spots at the 2012 World Triathlon Championships in Auckland, New Zealand (October 18-22, 2012) announced the Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation (STAC) and the Saskatoon Triathlon Club Inc. (STCI).
“It’s incredibly exciting for Saskatchewan to be able to offer our athletes this opportunity,” said CJ Katz, president of STAC. “We will be offering spots in the Olympic and Sprint distances in all age categories, which means that we will be able to send a potential 48 Saskatchewan athletes to Worlds next year!” Qualifying spots will be offered for 12 age categories beginning with 18 year olds and extending to athletes in the 70 plus category. Spots are available to male and female competitors.
The Craven-Genki Pike Lake Triathlon is also the provincial qualifier for the Saskatchewan Provincial Team, which will compete at the National Triathlon Championships in Kelowna August 20-21, 2011. All athletes who make the provincial team will receive funding support from STAC to attend nationals.

Evraz Kids of Steel® Race Series Kicks off With Smiles and Sunshine
REGINA, SK – Anyone can do a triathlon, even a five-year old. Roughly sixty boys and girls turned out on Saturday for the Campbell-Haliburton KOS Icebreaker, the first of four races in the Evraz Kids of Steel® Race Series. Whether they could swim like a fish or pedal their bicycle using training wheels the kids swam, biked and ran around the university campus to shouts of encouragement from family and friends.
The Evraz Kids of Steel® Race Series is a community-oriented kid-friendly triathlon series geared at encouraging children age five to 15 to participate in activities we all learned as a child – swimming, biking and running. Along with great weather, a great group of volunteers, a safe and fun environment, the kids came away with a fantastic experience, participation medals, and smiles for the rest of the day.

Saskatoon’s Gabrielle Edwards win’s Second Silver of last 8 days!
CLERMONT, FLORIDA – Sixteen year old Gabrielle Edwards is having quite a week! Seven days after winning a silver medal in Brazil, Gabrielle placed second at the 2011 Clermont Triathlon Junior North American Championships in Clermont Florida. Gabrielle finished the triathlon with a time of 1:00:37, 14 one-hundredths of a second behind Adriana Barraza from Mexico. The event was a 750m swim followed by a 20km bike and 5km run.
Only last weekend, Gabrielle teamed with her sister, Rachael, and London, Ontario’s Tenille Hoogland to win the silver medal at the Brazil FAST Triathlon in a team triathlon competition.
To top it all off, Gabrielle was named the Female Junior Athlete of the Year for 2010 on Saturday evening at the Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation Awards Banquet, held in Regina.
Both Gabrielle and Rachael train through the Saskatchewan Triathlon Centre (STC) under the guidance of their coach RossAnn Edwards. The STC Program offers elite level triathlon instruction and training for junior and young adult athletes in Saskatchewan and is operated by the Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation.

Saskatoon’s Gabrielle and Rachael Edwards win Silver at the Brazil Fast Triathlon
BRAZIL – Sister’s Gabrielle Edwards, age 16, and Rachael Edwards, age 19, along with London, Ontario teammate Tenille Hoogland, 26 yrs., won the silver medal in the women team event at the Brazil Fast Triathlon on Sunday, February 27th, in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.
Fielding two of of the youngest competitors in the competition, the Canadian team completed the 3-heat triathlon (250m swim, 3.6km bike, 1200m run for each heat) with 10 minutes rest between the heats for the silver medal. Gabrielle finished the first heat in third place followed closely by Tenille in 4th and Rachael in 6th. Tenille finished third in the second heat with Gabrielle in 8th and Rachael in 10th. In the final heat Tenille finished 2nd with Gabrielle in 8th (despite being pushed over during the heat) and Rachael in 10th.
The conditions were dramatically different from Saskatchewan with air temperature of 35 degree Celsius. The field for the event was first class with teams from South Africa (gold medal), Brazil (bronze medal), Italy, Argentina and Spain, including 3 women who have Olympic Games experience and a crowd of over 10,000 watching.

This partnership between STAC and EVRAZ will springboard the acclaimed race series to new levels of growth and development. EVRAZ has committed $11,500 over the next three years for the continued development of the KOS Race Series.
The EVRAZ Kids of Steel® Triathlon Race Series is focused on kids and young adults between the ages of 6 and 15 with the goal to introduce young people to the sport of triathlon in a fun, non-competitive, and safe manner. KOS triathlons use distances that are much shorter than those for adult triathlons. Most kids are able to complete a KOS triathlon while having fun in the process.

Saskatchewan Age Group Triathletes compete at Annual Apple Triathlon in Kelowna
KELOWNA, B.C. – Saskatchewan age groupers showed their might at the 28th Annual Apple Triathlon on August 21 and 22, 2010. With a contingent of 25 racers as old as eight years and young as 59 waving the green and yellow flag, the top male finisher in the Sprint distance category was Kevin Sutton of Saskatoon who received a gold medal in the Male 50-54 category, with a time of 1:08:00, a full two minutes and 44 seconds ahead of the next place finisher. He also ranked 11th of a total 378 racers.
Saskatchewan had a number of racers finish among the top 25 Olympic distance racers including Alyosha Boldt of Saskatoon earning a bronze in the Male 20-24 age group with a time of 2:08:03 and placing 24th in a field of 362 racers, and Jeff Hehn of Saskatoon also earned a bronze in the Male 45-49 group with a time to 2:08:03 and placing 25th overall.

REGINA BEACH (July 25, 2010) – The Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation is pleased to announce the Age Group teams for 2010. The teams were selected today at the Provincial Team qualifying race, the Regina Beach Triathlon in Regina Beach, Saskatchewan.

The Living Sky Tri Results
2010 Junior Western Canadian Triathlon Championships
July 11th, 2010 Pike lake, Saskatchewan
Two Saskatoon athletes finished on the podium at the Living Sky Tri, the 2010 Junior Western Canadian Triathlon Championships.
Joel Howlett finished third overall in the junior mens category with total time of 55:46. This finish was just 26 seconds behind the 2010 Living Sky Tri Champion Matt Sharpe from Victoria, B.C. Marc-Antoine Christinn from Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec finished second. This is Joel’s best finish at a Junior National event. Last year, Jowl finished fourth at the Canada Summer Games.
Sash Broda, from Prince Albert, finished 22nd, Aiden Katz, from Regina, finished 24th and Sean Hooper, from Saskatoon, finished 29th. Jeramie Anderson, from Saskatoon, had a flat tire on the bike course and did not finish.
Saskatoon’s Gabrielle Edwards ran a great race and finished second to Christine Ridenour, from Cowichan Bay, B.C.in the junior elite women’s category. Gabrielle’s time was 1:00:44. Only 17 seconds behind Christine’s winning time. Alison Hooper of Victoria, B.C. finished in third place in the women’s junior elite category.
Rachael Edwards, had the next best time for the Saskatchewan team, finishing 7th with a time of 1:03:11. Abby Miller, from Saskatoon finished 12th and Joanne Traves of Dalmeny finished 14th.
Overall, a very successful day of racing for all competitors; other categories included youth and adult races. Great thanks to Race Director Ron Golden, committee member RossAnn Edwards and all the many volunteers for helping to make the event such a great success.

50 of the best junior aged triathletes from across Canada are coming to Saskatoon this weekend for the 2010 Junior Western Canadian Triathlon Championship, the Living Sky Tri. This event marks the first time Saskatchewan has been awarded a national triathlon by Triathlon Canada. This race is part of the Teck National Junior Series and one of four events held by Triathlon Canada. The race has the best 16 to 19 year old male and female elite junior athletes from across Canada. Saskatchewan will be represented by 10 Athletes including:
· Joel Howlett from Saskatoon: Finished 4th at the prestigious Pan American Junior Triathlon Championships in Ixtapa, Mexico in May of 2010. Finished fourth at 2009 Canada Summer Games and was ranked 8th overall in Canada in 2009.
· Rachael Edwards from Saskatoon: qualified for and raced at the Jr. World Championships in Australia in 2009 finishing 31st. Was part of a silver medal triathlon relay team at the 2009 Canada Summer Games, finished fourth in the Pan American Jr. Triathlon Championships in 2009; has just returned to Saskatchewan from training at the National Triathlon Centre during the 09/10 school year.
· Gabrielle Edwards from Saskatoon: placed 8th in her first Pan American Jr. Championship in May, 2010; Won the silver medal at the Jr. National Triathlon Championships in 2009
· Abby Miller from Saskatoon: placed 11th at the Pan American Championships in May, 2010; ranked 18th in Canada in 2009.

Brad Spokes and Emanuela Bandol win the Merlin Ford Lincoln Spin Off Spadina Triathlon at Pike Lake, June 20th, 2010
Brad Spokes, from Saskatoon, and Emanuela Bandol, from Regina, finished first in the male and female Standard Distance event. Brad had a time of 2:09:13 and Emanuela finished in 2:21:49. The event had a record number of entries for 2010 with 178 individual participants plus more in the team category.
Joel Howlett, from Saskatoon, finished first in the Sprint category for juniors in what should prove to be a great test for the Living Sky Tri, the 2010 Junior Western Triathlon Championship at Pike Lake, July 11th, 2010. The Living Sky Tri will mark the first time Saskatchewan has hosted a Triathlon Canada event and will have the best junior triathletes from across Canada in attendance. Joel finished the Sprint race with a time of 1:00:17. Gabrielle Edwards, of Saskatoon, finished the junior Sprint race first overall for females just 33 seconds ahead of her sister, Rachael Edwards. Gabrielle finished the sprint event with a time of 1:05:26.
Ramsey Ezzat from North Vancouver won the Sprint category for male age group athletes and Nadine Brenaut won the sprint category for female age group athletes. Ramsey had a time of 1:02:39 and Nadine finished with a time of 1:12:06.

The Merlin Ford Lincoln Triathlon caps off one of the sports busiest weekends of the year in Saskatchewan. On Friday, the Dundurn Lion’s Club hosted the Dundurn Digger’s Try-all-Athon with kids from 6 years to 14 years participating at Blackstrap.
On Saturday, The 12th annual Brainsport Kids of Steel triathlon took place in Victoria Park and Riversdale pool in Saskatoon. It was a very successful event. Over 140 kids ages 3-15 participated in the triathlon. There were 23 Tykes and Trikes, ages 3-5 who did a run/bike/run race, the remainder of the kids raced a regular triathlon but with age appropriate distances. It was a fabulous day for the kids. Families spent the morning together having fun while promoting fitness. After the triathlon finished all participants and volunteers enjoyed a pizza picnic in the park. The Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation Announces the creation of the Saskatchewan Triathlon Centre
The Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation (STAC) is proud to announce creation of the Saskatchewan Triathlon Centre (STC). Lead by 2009 Team Saskatchewan’s Canada Summer Games coach for triathlon, RossAnn Edwards, this will be the first ever training centre dedicated to the sport of triathlon in Saskatchewan.
After a strong showing at the 2009 Canada Summer Games in triathlon, STAC recognized the need to continue our focus on the 12 to under 23 year old age groups for both male and female triathletes in Saskatchewan. Based out of Saskatoon, the STC will concentrate providing elite level instruction for our current junior athletes as well as undertake talent identification and training for upcoming youth and junior athletes across the province.
Our current pool of junior athletes will have an opportunity to demonstrate their dedication to elite performance and success at the Junior Western Triathlon Championships, the Living Sky Tri, at Pike Lake, Saskatchewan, July 11th, 2010. This event marks the first time Saskatchewan has hosted a national triathlon sanctioned by Triathlon Canada.

Four Saskatchewan triathletes competed at the PATCO Junior triathlon Pan American Championships in Ixtapa, Mexico on the weekend. Race conditions were tough and the high surf and large waves forced officials to change the event to a duathlon.
Joel Howlett from Saskatoon finished 4th overall among junior men and was the 2nd Canadian to cross the finish line. Joel managed to avoid several bike crashes and finish with an overall time of 52:34.
Gabrielle Edwards, Saskatoon, SK, finished 8th overall among junior women with a time of 59:49. Abby Miller, also from Saskatoon, finished 11th and Rachael Edwards finished 14th.

The Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation (STAC) will be celebrating 25 years in Saskatchewan at its 2009 AGM and Awards Banquet, March 6, 2010 held at the Willows. Incorporated in August of 1985, STAC is the sport governing body for the sport of triathlon in Saskatchewan. Our original president, Don Gallo, will offer an exciting presentation on the history of the sport in Saskatchewan.
STAC will also be honoring their top athletes, volunteers and supporters for their achievements over the course of the year. Our special guest speaker is 2004 Canadian Olympic Triathlon Coach Lance Watson, who will also be delivering two exciting camps in the afternoon prior to the AGM and banquet. These camps are open to anyone and tickets are still available on the STAC web site.
The STAC AGM Awards Banquet is Saturday, March 6th at the Willows Golf & Country Club. AGM 5:30pm, Banquet 6:30 pm. Tickets are still on sale through our web site www.triathlonsaskatchewan.org.
