Call for Coaches

The Saskatchewan Triathlon Association is calling for NCCP coaches to Help with presenting workshops around the province as we approach the Saskatchewan Summer Games in 2008 and the Canada Summer Games in 2009. We would like coaches that are certified in swim, bike or run, with some experience in triathlon. We also would encourage youth and juniors who are participating in triathlon and do not have coaching qualifications, but are interested in assisting coaches, to identify themselves. Workshops would target both youth and adults.
Honorariums are available based on qualifications.

Triathlon Canada NCCP Cpmpetition Introduction Challenge Process

Attention triathlon coaches,
The document linked below describes the process by which non-certified, but knowledgeable, coaches can become certified Triathlon coaches. Triathlon Canada has recently received approval for its "Challenge" process whereby interested coaches do not have to attend the two weekend clinics in order to become certified. However, there is still a considerable amount of work that must be done in order to become certified. All of the written tasks as well as the part 3 coaching camp must be completed and passed. As well, a coaching portfolio must be prepared and submitted that shows that you are actively coaching within the sport. This is important as this is the portion of the coaching education process that provides Triathlon Canada with the comfort level that the coaches seeking certification are competent at the task of coaching.

A Message from Jim Holmstrom, STAC's head of coaching.

Hello everyone,
A link is included below to an update on the triathlon coaching education courses. There are several important points to be made about the new approach. First, these courses are not intended to be taken by athletes looking to learn about training, they are for people wanting to become certified as coaches. The technical aspect of the course is slightly upgraded from the old level 1, but the majority of the material is on the HOW, not the WHAT. Taking the course to learn the technical aspect of triathlon would be a waste of time and money. Secondly, not all coaches will have to take the Introduction to competition (Comp Intro or CI) course. This is because higher level coaches can enter at the higher level and will simply have to prove that they are competent at that level. This is because CI coaches are those coaches who will be dealing with youth and junior athletes who are just beginning their athletic careers. The new model wants to generate coaches who are expert at dealing with those athletes. Coaches dealing with elite juniors (Canada Games Athletes) and experienced age groupers will be those we target for training at the Competition Development level. Coaches dealing with elite under 23 and national team elite athletes will be High Performance coaches. The meaning here is that gone are the days of a single coach taking an athlete from age 12 to retirement at age 30. Because each stage of an athletes development has specific challenges and requirements it is envisioned that the athlete should have as a coach someone who is specifically trained to deal with those development issues. This is a bit of a paradigm shift. My feeling is that as a PGB we should identify coaches that are interested in dealing with youth and get them into the CI stream this fall. Coaches that are interested in dealing with CSG athletes should begin working with selected athletes soon so that they can begin to develop the materials required to show competence at the Comp Dev level (see attachment on Comp Dev path). Third, re-certification will be required every two years. This means that coaches will have to continually upgrade their knowledge base and continue active coaching in order to maintain their certification. Requirements for re-certification will be made available as soon as they are developed. This is an important point. The reason behind re-certification is that it will force coaches to continually learn new techniques and information so that they can become the best CI (or Comp Dev) coach that they can be. As a result a CI coach will not simply be a novice coach who took one course 8 years ago and hasn't picked up a specific book since. They will be experts at dealing with novice athletes and guiding their early development as athletes and individuals, increasing the chances that they will remain in sport for life. Likewise, the Comp Dev coaches will be experts at taking over these athletes after their fundamental development and continuing their development towards being capable of performing on the national stage (at the junior national championships or CSG).

Lastly, there is still no firm date for the first Comp Intro course. Everyone involved would like to have several across the country in November or early December. I believe the plans were for one in each of BC, Sk, Ont, and Quebec, but these are still unconfirmed so don't quote me on them. I will keep everyone updated.

Feel free to contact me by my e-mail if you have any questions. I will be in Regina at the Canada Summer Games, so I may not be answering e-mail during that week.

Hope to hear from everyone interested.
Thanks,

Jim Holmstrom
